Canberra became the international focus this Sunday April 6, 2008 when the International Torch Relay – Remembrance Flame was lit by Mr Stefan Romaniv, President of the Federation of Ukrainian Organizations in Australia and International Flame - Torch Relay Committee Chairman to raise awareness of the Famine in Ukraine in 1932-33 on the occasion 75th Anniversary of the Famine and to continue Ukraine’s commitment to have the Famine recognised as an Act of Genocide by the United Nations.
The Torch and Flame will now travel to 33 countries and end its journey in Ukraine in November of this year in memory of the 7-10 million people starved to death as a result of Stalin’s’ forced collectivisation program .
The Flame did begin its journey in Australia and with the historic lighting of the Flame, which was held on Sunday April 6, 2008 at 1.00 pm. at the Holodomor Memorial St Nicholas Orthodox Church Grounds Mackay Gardens, Turner
Sunday’s ceremony included a Torch Blessing by the reverend Mychailo Solomko of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UAPTS) and the rev. Oleh Stefanyschyn of the Ukrainian Catholic Church and the official lighting of the Torch by survivors of the Famine – Mrs. Aleksandra Kryvoschyjia and…, who did pass on the baton to youth representatives in the community and to Senator Gary Humphries Member of Parliament.
Their message was short but sharp:
Young people did carry the flame. – It is now your responsibility to remember those who perished and not let the world forget!
The Federal Parliament (Feb 22 2008) and the Victorian Parliament (Feb 27 2008) have passed motions of support.
The International Torch is an official initiative of the Ukrainian Government and the Ukrainian World Congress. Internationally Communities which host the Flame will have an opportunity to organize events in conjunction with its arrival.
On 17 April 2008 Ukraine's Ambassador to Australia, Valentyn Adomaytis, and Chairman of the Australian Federation of Ukrainian Organizations and chair of the International Coordinating Committee, Stefan Romaniw will travel to Toronto for the handling over the torch ceremony to the Ukrainian communities in Canada and US.

В Австралія в неділю 6-го квітня цр започатковано біля пам’ятника жертвам Голодомору акцію, якою передаватиметься символічна свічка ( смолоскип) упродовж року як естафета з країни в країну, всього 33 країни. Акція буде завершена у листопаді в Україні, де проходитимуть пропам’ятні державні заходи.
Смолоскип був посвячений о. Михайлом Соломкою, УАПЦ та o. Олегом Стефанишиним УКЦ. Коротко промовляли голова СУОА і голова Міжнародного Комітету акції незгасимої свічки Стефан Романів, амбасадор України п. Валентин Адомайтіс і сенатор австралійського парляменту Гері Гамфріс. Пані Олександра Кривошия, яка пережила голодомор передала сенаторові Гампріс Незгасиму свічку – смолоскип, він у свою чергу разом з українською молодю пластунами і сумівцями тримали смолоскип, якого передавали з рук до рук всім присутнім ( як це було гарно й урочисто ) – і врешті Маруся Яцишин, діюча голова СУМ-у в Квінбієні-Канбері передала смолоским сіднейським сумівцям ! „Незгасима свічка“ є спільним проєктом Міністерства Закордонних Справ України (МЗС) і Міжнародного Координаційного Комітету для відмічення ( відзначення) 75-ої річниці Голодомору Світового Конгресу Українців (МКК СКУ) , який схвалено Секретаріятом Президента України. Програми довкола побуту свічки у кожній країні спільно організуватимуть крайові громадські надбудови, церкви, організації та установи в співпраці з посольствами України.
